They keep farms alive and support local farmers. They promote biodiversity and prevent overdevelopment. And they are less dependent on oil, as industrial foods (including organic ones) must travel long distances from farm to fork. To put it simply, local foods are just better for our planet. Period. Ironically, this is the essence of what Michael Pollan has so eloquently taught us. I just think I outdid him at his own game.
